The Faculty of Mathematics has been part of the University of Lodz since its foundation in 1945. It is noteworthy that in 1946 the Department of Mathematics II was established under the supervision of Professor Stanisław Mazur, a student and close collaborator of Stefan Banach. In 1951 a decision was made to divide the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences into the Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences and the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. In this form the Faculty functioned until 1996, when by a decision of the Senate of the University of Lodz an independent Faculty of Mathematics was established. In March 2007, the Faculty of Mathematics changed its name to the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, although the tradition of teaching computer science dates back to 1970, when the Department of Computer Science and Cybernetics was established. The Faculty currently comprises 11 departments, and the position of Dean is held by Grażyna Horbaczewska, Ph.

At the moment (April 2025) the Faculty employs 103 academic teachers, including 34 independent employees - professors and doctors with habilitation. The high level of the Faculty's scientific staff makes it possible to conduct not only first- and second-level studies in the fields of mathematics, computer science and data analysis, but also doctoral studies - of the third degree (based on the Doctoral School of the University of Lodz) and postgraduate studies. Researchers from WMiI are engaged in research across almost all fields of mathematics and numerous areas of computer science.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Łódź has very good premises: many lecture halls, audiovisual laboratories, extensive IT infrastructure. Students have at their disposal 10 computer labs, as well as an additional computer lab for video and sound. Students of the Faculty have the possibility to work on private portable computers in wired or wi-fi network. Our building is located close to the dormitories and other university buildings. The building is also adapted to the needs of physically challenged people, it has a ramp for wheelchairs and an elevator.

Since 2012, the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science has had a Business Council, thanks to which we cooperate more closely with employers from the Łódź region, including the largest IT companies in Łódź. Thanks to this cooperation, students are taught the latest trends in computer science, participate in internships and apprenticeships, gain certificates and have an easier start in their careers.

The Faculty holds many interesting free lectures, events, conferences and meetings with company representatives. The Faculty is the holder of MSDNA license, within the framework of which the students may install Microsoft software available within this license on their private computers free of charge.

The library of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Lodz has a rich collection of books on mathematics and computer science (ca. 39,000 volumes) and many titles of Polish and foreign journals. The library offers on-line access to many journals and to the Mathematical Reviews database.

There is a canteen in the Faculty area where you can have a snack or lunch, and during breaks you can relax on a bench in the cosy patio.
